Can we help with social and emotional well-being in schools as architects? Nada Milivojevic, Clare Mulholland & Jim Mulholland from Queens University Belfast and TODD Architects
This presentation explores ways of addressing social and emotional well-being in school design. To achieve a holistic design, greater care needs to be implemented to incorporate needs of all end-users, allow for a range of teaching methods, different learning styles, address social life and improve overall social connections within the school estate and with the community. The presentation shows a research-led design approach and lessons learnt from schools in Northern Ireland, completed projects and projects which are at different stages of design development. The research behind this presentation is a joint project between Queen’s University Belfast and TODD Architects.
University of Edinburgh Health & Wellbeing Centre: Karen Pickering, Page \ Park Architects
Page \ Park design their healthcare buildings to facilitate the healing of the body and the mind. They are very interested in design for wellness and would like to show their approach by discussing the recently completed Wellbeing Centre for the University of Edinburgh. A 1960’s brutalist building has been transformed into a purpose-designed facility, bringing together student disability and counseling services. Here health and well-being has been put at the forefront of design, student life and the university experience.
